Highlighting Blackness in Children's Literature

About the Creator

You'd be surprised to learn that I never truly considered myself to be a bookworm, though I did have a handful of favorites. So how was BKBC born? Through my education and experiences! I realized that books were such important and flexible tools to teach children various things. Not only are books for learning to read, but they can also be skillfully used to build social-emotional skills, cognitive skills, motor skills, and just for plain entertainment! And from a psychological perspective, adding a layer of racial representation has so many benefits regarding building positive identities.

I got my B.S. in Psychology with a Children's Literature Certificate from the University of Pittsburgh, and my M.Ed. in Educational Psychology from Temple University. I have worked with young children in many different settings to many different capacities. From camp counselor to reading tutor, childcare substitute to Preschool teacher, and elementary mentor to behavior therapist. I've created individualized and group lesson plans, conducted various learning and developmental assessments, and planned countless projects. I hope to use my knowledge and experiences to share with others to aid in their children's or students' development.
